What is Massage and How Can You Benefit from It?
By Massage Therapist, Bethany Rider

April 29th, 2013
Massage can be defined as a systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of obtaining or maintain health. Using long, gliding strokes of effleurage and kneading strokes of petrissage, a therapist uses pressure to help relieve muscle tension and pain. Each
massage is adapted to fit the client's wants and needs at that moment so not every session will be the same. Before each massage, your therapist will have a conversation with you about your wants and needs for the session. This conversation allows for you both to have the same goal for the end of the
session.
Swedish massage is the most common form of massage. It can be fully relaxation, fully therapeutic, or a combination of both. A massage that is fully relaxation will usually include long,
gliding strokes mixed with some muscle kneading. Little to no time is spent finding and relieving muscle tension. The goal is for the client to fully relax and reduce stress.
A fully therapeutic massage includes long, gliding strokes, kneading strokes, as well as pressure point work, stretching, and range of motion exercises. There is a lot of movement for the client and involves the reduction of muscle tension through most areas of the body. Due to the pressure point
work, stretching, range of motion exercises and moving, it is not a relaxing form of massage for most people.
A massage that includes a combination of relaxation and therapeutic has the long, gliding strokes, kneading strokes and pressure point work. It includes the reduction of tension in just one or two areas that the client mentions but is meant to be relaxing. There is usually no stretching or range of
motion exercises involved in this form of massage because they can be disturbing to relaxation. All three of these massages are beneficial and no one is better than the other. All can be performed with the pressure level that is most comfortable for the client, including deep tissue. Most of my clients prefer the combination of relaxation and therapeutic because they want to reduce the tension that is bothering them the most at that moment while still becoming relaxed enough to fall asleep on the table.
There are so many benefits to receiving a massage that it would take forever to list them all. I am going to mention the ones that I think are most applicable for someone who is new to massage and wants to know instant results. These benefits are as follows:
* Relax muscle tension
* Boost immunity
* Improve circulation
* Release endorphins
* Lower blood pressure
* Decrease levels of stress hormones
* Increase joint flexibility
* Improve posture
* Relieve pain
* Reduce fatigue and increase vigor
* Improve sleep patterns
* Improve mood
* Decrease feelings of anger
* Improves self-esteem
* Improves lifestyle habits
And last but certainly not least
* It feels wonderful!
